Oklinging the ancestors
In Rus', they believed that on this day the deceased mourn about their earthly life and wanted to see their relatives. Therefore, it was customary to visit the cemeteries – to lament the graves and to see their parents. As a rule, elderly women and old women at the morning dawn did it.
The weepers on the graveyard called their dead parents: “Get up, try, look at your children, look at us, orphans, from your homes, and sweat with a word affectionate!” It was believed that on this day the earth is revealed, and the souls of the deceased can fly into the light of God. The dining table was therefore set as satisfying as possible, so that the ancestors were convinced that their children and grandchildren live well.
Before each case, on this day they prayed by the whole family. However, they treated work with sacred trepidation. The people on this day recalled sayings about work: “Ladyrings on arable land – that is a rubbish in the hive”; “Do you want bread with honey – take a shovel”; “Lying on the floors – there is no bread.”
The day was also important for those who were engaged in fishing: to catch fish on this day was considered a great sin. Perhaps this belief was due to the fact that at about this time many river fish species are about caviar. By the way, the peasants were also wondering about the fish young animals: if the fry disperse quickly, then you can sow early, and if they stay together for a long time, then you should wait.
