In Kansk, a religious conscript seeks alternative service

December 5 12:35
In Kansk, a conscript asked to replace military service with an alternative one, declaring that he was a deeply religious person.
The young man submitted an application to the draft commission, in which he indicated that military service was contrary to his convictions and religion. The guy said that he cannot take up arms and take an oath, but he does not refuse to serve the Motherland. He asked to be sent to alternative civilian service.
However, the draft commission rejected the young man. The guy was recognized as fit for military service, and they also pointed out to him that he had submitted his application late and that there was insufficient evidence confirming his religious position.
Disagreeing with this decision, the conscript appealed to the Kansk City Court. When considering the claim, the judge heard the arguments of the plaintiff and a representative of the military commissariat, studied the guy’s personal file and interrogated his father as a witness.
“The man explained that the family has morning and evening prayers, conversations about God and faith, and together they visit the House of Prayer of Evangelical Christians – Baptists. In July 2024, his son accepted God into his heart, expressed his convictions and wishes to exercise the legal right to perform alternative civilian service,” the joint press service of the courts of the Krasnoyarsk Territory reported.
The young man’s father also stated that he served in the army at one time, however, he did not take the oath and did not take up arms.
When making the decision, the judge took into account that the conscript has been registered with the military since January 2023; in his personal file there is a statement inviting the parents to answer the question about the attitude of their son and family members to religion, which the boy’s mother ignored.
The court decided that there was insufficient evidence of the conscript’s strong religious beliefs and dismissed the claim.
The plaintiff filed an appeal against the court's decision.
