Ivan the Old Peshopshernik
About the Monk John the Old Peshopurnik (Paleolawarite), whose memory is celebrated on this day, very few information has been preserved. The life of this saint, famous for ascetic life and special piety is contained in hagiographic literature, which is one of the main forms of church literature, and liturgical texts.
In Rus' on this day, peasant women went out into the field with canvas, bowed in all directions and, turning to the east, said: “Here you are, mother-spring, new novelty!”. After that, the fabric was spread on the ground, put a pie on it and went home. This was done so that the spring was good and in gratitude for gifts to disfigure linen and hemp in abundance. Such a ceremony was called “put on spring in Novina.”
