The price of diesel fell sharply overnight. “Such a discount has never been seen at this level in Romania”. Reductions in gasoline

The price of fuel decreased on Wednesday morning at Petrom gas stations, reports the website Economica.net.

According to the cited source, a liter of petrol at Petrom cost 9.32 lei on Wednesday, 3 banis less than on Tuesday, while the price of diesel was 40 banis lower, i.e. 9.99/litre.

Journalists from Economica claim that such a discount on diesel fuel has never been seen in Romania.

In the absence of a drop in the price of diesel/ton at the international level, the only explanation found by the journalists is that the effects of the “GEO issued last week obliging all oil companies to reduce additions across the chain to the average level of 2025” are beginning to manifest.

Finance Minister: “Legislation on the fuel crisis will be adopted this week”

The Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, announced that the legislation regarding the declaration of the fuel crisis has already been ratified and stated that he hopes it will be adopted by the end of the week.

In the speech given on Wednesday, at The Economist conference, Nazare also referred to the fuel crisis.

“We have already ratified the legislation regarding the declaration of the fuel crisis we are facing. We already have some measures implemented, we have prepared measures and advanced measures”, Alexandru Nazare said.

He specified that the discussions in the working group created by the prime minister continue on Wednesday.

“I hope to have the legislation approved by the end of the week, so that the measures will already be implemented to keep the crisis we are in under control,” the Minister of Finance emphasized.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared, on Monday, that the decision taken in the coalition is to reduce the value of the excise tax from the price of fuel in the next period and in the first stage they will focus on diesel fuel, because this is where the biggest increases were. President Nicusor Dan stated, on Monday evening, that it is less important if the Government decides to lower the VAT or reduce the excise duty on fuels, what is important is the final impact on prices. The president appreciates that the measures he discussed with the leaders of the Coalition, if they are assumed, “will be a decrease, it will be sensible”.

“Because we reach an area or are approaching a plateau area and we already see where the prices have stopped, on the one hand we propose that, by analyzing the market, where it is possible to intervene. We had the possibility to intervene on the taxes that are associated with fuels, or the value added tax or the excise duty, here analyzing the pluses and minuses to avoid an infringement procedure with the Commission, because if you intervene on VAT, you have such a procedure, we being in an excessive deficit and unable, therefore, to operate on certain tax reductions, because we still have problems, we made this decision, to intervene on the excise component,” said the prime minister to Digi24.

“In the next period, we will reduce the value of the excise tax on the price of fuel, in such a way as to help the buyers to buy a cheaper fuel”, said the head of the Executive.

The prime minister stated that they will primarily focus on diesel.

“In the first stage, we are focusing on diesel fuel, because this is where the biggest increases were and over 70% of fuel consumption in Romania is diesel fuel. Acting in this area in stages, it impacts 2 or 3 of those who use cars in Romania. (..) If we want to have an effect, we must intervene where the effect is maximum and has an impact on an important number of cities. This means, to go further, that we are working on one or two working hypotheses that will be presented in the following days in such a way that, on the one hand, we have the maximum impact on the market, but, on the other hand, we also take into account the possibilities we have, because all these reductions implicitly mean an expense that is paid by the state budget”, said Bolojan.

“This intervention that we are doing must be sustainable and be covered by resources from the state budget”, Ilie Bolojan also stated, showing that an amount of money from the excise tax paid today by those who sell fuel will be reduced.

According to Bolojan, the Ministry of Finance is working these days on the simulations that must be done, in order to calculate exactly the impact on both the price and the total cost of this reduction, which must be covered from the budget, so that this measure has its finality, has an effect and on the other hand can be sustained.

“In the coming days we will announce exactly what this reduction will be. The money will practically no longer be collected from the state budget and we must discuss very openly, this type of facility must be covered from somewhere,” Bolojan said.
