She emphasized the participation of Ukrainians in the elimination of the accident, remembered the construction of the sarcophagus and the efforts of the whole world in the construction of a new safe confinement over the 4th power unit to protect against re-leakage of radiation.
“Unfortunately, this year, this anniversary differs from the previous ones, from others, because on the night of February 14, the Russians were purposefully attacked by a new safe conformation, which has become an unexpected and unprecedented event in general for the whole world. To date, the Arch of the Confinition partially lost its functionality,” the minister said.
Grinchuk added that the Russian attack forced to postpone the planned work to turn the shelter into the environmentally friendly object, because now all forces are aimed at conducting the study of damage, analyzing the functionality of the arch and developing a plan for its restoration.
“It is necessary to do this, of course, and the whole world is interested in this, in a very short time than we are doing now,” she said.
The minister emphasized that this is not the first damage caused by Russia of the station. In the early days of a full -scale invasion in 2022, the Russian Federation attacked and occupied the Chernobyl alienation zone, damaging the monitoring system and other equipment of the station. Now, thanks to international partners, the monitoring system is completely restored, she added.
According to Grinchuk, on the eve of the ministry a meeting was held with Norwegian partners who give additional financing of almost € 22 million to improve the monitoring system, the working conditions of the Chernobyl and other enterprises in the alienation zone.
“In addition, it is very important to say that we are still working to turn the zone of alienation into a revival zone,” Grinchuk emphasized.
Now, she noted, the primary task is to restore a safe confinement, which will continue to work to turn the object into an environmentally friendly ecosystem. Significant work is underway to improve the work of storage facilities for the spent nuclear fuel, they also pay much attention to the development of renewable energy, which is able to support the Ukrainian energy system and ensure greater energy -taxation of critical objects in the alienation zone.
When asked about the leak of radiation after the blow, the minister said that, despite the complexity and danger of the situation, the radiation background has never changed and remains what was before the Russian attack. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant is constantly monitored and enhanced radiation control, and their data is received not only by our specialists and rescuers, but also to the IAEA specialists so that they can exercise their control and, in which case, also respond accordingly.
“Work is underway in many areas, we do not stop, despite the fact that Russians put both Ukrainians and humanity at the risk of another nuclear incident,” Grinchuk emphasized.
