Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that he is considering supporting Greece and other countries to combat violent fires that broke out in the Jerusalem region, AFP reports.
The fires lit on Wednesday morning in forested areas due to a heat wave, and then expanded.
The police evacuated the inhabitants of several villages located about 20 kilometers west of Jerusalem, while the firefighters were “held in the region to try to extinguish the fire.”
In statements made to the headquarters of the firefighters, Prime Minister Netanyahu asked his services to contact “Greece and other neighboring countries in case of necessity to fight these fires.
“We do not yet know how this fire will evolve,” said the head of the Israeli government.
According to the images broadcast by the press, several intervention aircraft were carried out on the spot and threw water and fire extinguishing substances.
“The forces of the Israeli police, the border police, the firefighters, the intervention services, the authority to protect the nature and parks, the security devices, as well as other bodies continue to intervene on the ground due to the propagation of fires,” the police announced in a statement.
Fires are very common in Israel due to high temperatures.
