Norway authorities will artificially snow the glacier at the highest peak of the country

Galdhopiggen is a mountain peak in the Jotunheimen massif in the Scandinavian Alps. The 2469 m height is the highest point in Norway, Scandinavia and Northern Europe.
The Norwegian authorities began the production of artificial snow to cover the glacier on Galdhopiggen as early as 2022. However, in recent years, the glacier has shrunk drastically. The current proposal assumes the expiration of 700,000 on it. Siśc. artificial snow annually.
“It's a paradox that we have to produce snow here at Galdhopiggen.” But this is the reality now – said Per Arne Vole, director of the ski center operating at the summit. He added that only during his term of office the glacier shrunk at 17 m – In eight years there will be no glacier here if we do not start to wave artificial snow now Vole noticed.
“Changes are inevitable”
Thanks to the large artificial snow, it will be possible to maintain a ski center by 2050. After this time, the climatic models of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute are much more uncertain.
Professor Rune Strand Ugardm from the Norwegian University of Sciences and Technology agrees that artificial snow can help in the “rebuild” of the glacier. “There is really no other way,” he admitted. He warned, however, that due to climate change, the disappearance of the glacier was inevitable in the long run.
It reflects this disturbing tendency in Norway. The Veslevbreen glacier has shrunk so much that it is no longer visible to tourists at the foot of the mountain. The effects of global warming are felt throughout the country. In October 2024, the Arctic city of Tromso recorded the highest temperature for 100 years.
