The Israeli army said on Sunday that the analysis carried out after the killing, last month, of several members of the emergency services in Gaza found that there were “more professional failures” and that a commander will be dismissed because of the incident, reports Reuters.
15 paramedics and other members of the rescue forces were deadly shot on March 23, in three separate fire exchanges, in the same location near the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. They were buried in a shallow grave, where their bodies were found a week later by officials of the United Nations and Palestinian red cresia.
In a statement published on Sunday, the army said that a commander officer is to be officially reprimanded. A deputy commander, a reservist who was a land commander, will be dismissed because he provided an incomplete and inaccurate report, he said.
“The examination has identified several professional failures, orders of orders and a failure in the full report of the incident,” said the army.
“The shots in the first two incidents resulted from an operational misunderstanding of the troops, who thought they were facing a tangible threat from the enemy forces. The third incident involved a violation of orders during a fighting,” he said.
According to the army, the Military Prosecutor General has carried out his own investigation and criminal charges could be formulated.
A video recording recovered from the mobile phone of one of the deceased men and published by the Palestinian red crescent showed emergency interventions in uniform and ambulances and clearly marked firefighters, with the lights on which it is drawn by the soldiers.

General Major Yoav Har-even, who performed the acnheta, told the press that the soldiers thought they were threatened after they had to be initially identified as a Hamas vehicle, but which was actually an ambulance. Two occupants were killed, and a third was detained and interrogated for alleged links with Hamas. The man was released the next day, after other interrogations.
The Israeli army says that Hamas often hides his activities among civilians and that there have been cases in the past where the militant group used ambulances to carry out operations. However, the army states that the soldiers are trained to distinguish between authentic emergency vehicles and those used by Hamas.
“Yes, we make mistakes,” the reporters told the military spokesman Effie Defrin, adding that the incident took place in a “complex combat area”.
Har-even said that 12 people were killed in the second shift of fires and another person was killed in the third incident.
