

The decision to rename part of the Kyarnave Street to Tumas Street was made on April 16 by the Historical memory of Vilnius.
Tumas died in Ukraine in early 2024, notes the publication.
The Chairman of the Commission Camile Gogelen said that the decision to rename was agreed with the relatives of the deceased Lithuanian volunteer.
When exactly the street is renamed, she could not say, but the chairman of the commission expressed confidence that “the process should not take much time.”
Gogolen noted that in the future the question of perpetuating the memory of two more Lithuanians who died in Ukraine, director Mantas Kvedaravravravichyus (was killed in Mariupol in 2022) and volunteer of Thomas Valentinelis (died in March 2025).
Context
The President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky announced the creation of the international legion on the fourth day of the full -scale invasion of the Russian Federation, on February 27, 2022. He called on foreign citizens to “join the protection of security in Europe and the world.”
The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine in March reported that they were going to Ukraine Volunteers from 52 countries who will join the international legion to combat Russia's invasion. The department noted that the Ukrainian authorities received about 20 thousand applications from them.
The speaker of the international legion said that the legion Volunteers from all continents joined, but did not name their exact number. “We have representatives of 55 countries from all continents, even such far as Brazil, South Korea, Australia,” he said.
