Russia's armed forces tried to organize a major assault in the south of the Zaporojie region overnight, the Ukrainian army said on Thursday, adding that its troops have managed to reject the attack, The Moscow Times and Kyiv Post reported.
According to the defense forces in southern Ukraine, at least 320 Russian soldiers attacked five villages in the southeast of Zaporojie (the regional capital) starting on Wednesday, from 6:00 pm. Russian troops used 40 armored vehicles, a dozen buggy and three tanks, the Ukrainian army said.
“On April 16, around 6:00 pm, in southern Ukraine, the enemy changed his tactic and began the assault operations in coordinated units,” said the Ukrainian army, in a statement published on the Telegram Messenger application.
“The enemy failed. The Ukrainian defense forces did not lose any position,” the army said.
The attacks of artillery and Ukrainian drones killed 140 Russian soldiers, destroyed 29 military equipment and damaged all three tanks during two and a half hours, according to the statement.
The Moscow Times notes that he could not independently verify the statements of the Ukrainian army. The Russian Defense Ministry has not reported any offensive operation in the Zaporojie region in the last 24 hours.
Also, the Ukrainian army has broadcast filmed images from the drone that show hit vehicles, which he said describing the attack of the Russians from Zaporojie.
Zaporojie is one of the four Ukrainian regions partially occupied by Russian troops. Moscow considers it one of the so-called “new territories” of Russia, although it does not have full control over the region. In 2022, Russia illegally annexed the provinces Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporojie and Herson, which they do not fully control.
