North Korea secretly builds a war ship of impressive proportions, possibly the largest ever built by this country. The photos taken on April 6 by the Maxic Technologies and Planet Labs companies show the work in a naval site in the city of Nampo, located on the west coast, about 60 km from the capital Phenian.
The military analysts who studied the images say that the ship could be a modern frigate, equipped with vertical rocket launchers, capable of hitting both land and sea targets. With an estimated length of 140 meters, the vessel would be twice as large as any other ship in the current North Korean fleet, according to CNN.
Modernization of North Korean armed forces
This project is part of a larger plan of the leader Kim Jong a modernization of the army. In recent years, North Korea has tested long-range ballistic missiles and has strengthened its relationships with Russia, which could help the regime overcome the sanctions imposed by the UN.
Former South Korean Admiral Kim Duk-Ki believes that Moscow could provide the technology needed to equip the frigate with advanced missile systems. In fact, images with this ship have been broadcast since last year on the North Korean state television, where Kim Jong appeared by inspecting the works.
But experts say it is too early for conclusions. Even if the vessel seems modern and well armed, the construction of an effective battlefield involves the integration of complex systems: radar, sensors, electronics, communications and high -performance armament. Carl Schuster, former officer in the US Marina, says the Phenian would need at least one year to test the sea.
Large but outdated fleet
Despite the modernization efforts, the naval fleet of North Korea is largely outdated. According to an American report from 2021, the North Korean Marina has almost 400 patrol vessels and 70 submarines, mostly small and technologically outdated. Only two major frigates are still active, and they date from the 1970s.
However, the North Korean leader seems determined to change this. In addition to the Nampo frigate, there is also a nuclear propulsion submarine in the port of Sinpo, and another large ship is under construction in Chongjin. Kim recently said that a new naval base is needed to host these large ships.
Despite doubts about the real capacities of the Phenian, experts warn that the new frigate could be a serious threat, especially if it will be equipped with hypersonic missiles, which North Korea says they have already tested.
