At least 218 people lost their lives after the collapse of a disco roof on Monday night in Santo Domingo on Monday, in the Dominican Republic, the security authorities who are about to cease in the accident area, AFP, took over by Agerpres on Thursday.

The roof of the Jet Set club collapsed on Monday night during the concert held by the singer by Merengue Rubby Pérez, who is among the deceased.

“Unfortunately, and I'm sorry, 218 people who died according to preliminary data,” the director of the Center for Emergency Operations (COE), Juan Manuel Méndez told the press, specifying that 189 people were saved from the drama. “Our rescuers are about to end the search operations,” he added.

The authorities excluded on Thursday the opportunity to find new survivors. The government, in turn, has announced that it will open an investigation into the disaster as soon as the search and rescue operations will be completed.

The Dominican press estimates that between 500 and 1,000 people were at Jet Set, a popular nightclub, frequented by celebrities. The authorities did not make public the number of missing persons and reiterated calls for the population to donate blood for the over 150 injured.

In a video broadcast on social networks you can see the moment of collapse of the roof while singer Rubby Pérez was on stage. The Jet Set Club organizes concerts every Monday. Rubby's presence attracted a large audience on the night of the tragedy.

The victims include the governor of the province Monte Cristi (Northeast) Nelsy Cruz, as well as the former baseball players Tony Blanco and Octavio Del. The latter, 51 years old, won World Series in 2011.

In a statement, the representatives of the nightclub have assured that they will fully and transparently collaborate with the authorities to clarify what happened.

Dominican President Luis Abinader went on the spot on Tuesday morning and decreed three days of national mourning in memory of the victims of the tragedy.

Attracted by beaches, music, nightlife and colonial architecture in Santo Domingo, over 11 million tourists visited the Dominican Republic in 2024, according to the Ministry of Tourism. This sector generates about 15% of GDP.
