Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Israel on Friday of resembling divisions in Syria of “dynamit the revolution” that has removed Bashar al-Assad from power, AFP reports.
Turkey is a key supporter of the new Syrian leader, Ahmed al-Shaara, whose Islamist group, Hayat Tahrir al-Ham (HTS), led the rebellious coalition to Bashar al-Assad to flee the country in December after more than five decades in which his family led Syria.
“Israel is trying to dynamite the Revolution of December 8 by inciting ethnic and religious affiliates and by returning minorities in Syria,” said President Erdogan at the Antalya diplomatic forum.
Sharaa, who arrived on Friday in Antalya, met with the Turkish leader in the margin of the event. For the interim president of Syria it was the second journey in Turkey after the change of regime from Damascus. In February he was received by Erdogan in Ankara.
Ahmed Al-Shaara also met with the Foreign Minister of Qatar.
Discussions between Turkey and Israel about the situation in Syria
This week, officials from Turkey and Israel began discussions for the defamation of tensions in Syria. The two regional powers are struggling for influence in the political country from a political point of view.
Israel has launched air attacks and terrestrial incursions to keep Syrian forces away from its border, which has sparked criticism from Ankara.
A Syrian source claims that Turkey wants to establish “military positions” in Syria, one of which “inside the T-4 base”, an airline in the Homs province, which was targeted by the blows of the Israeli army last week.
The first technical meeting between Turkish and Israeli officials took place on Wednesday in Azerbaijan, a source of the Turkish Ministry of Defense said.
In an interview of the same day, the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan, stressed that this does not mean that Turkey and Israel are going to a normalization of the relations affected by the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
The influence that Ankara has on the new authorities in Syria has worried Israel, who believes that Sharaa's forces are jihadist. The Israeli army launched hundreds of blows on the military locations in Syria after the fall of the Assad regime.
“Israel turns into a problematic country, which directly threaten the stability of the region, especially through its attacks on Lebanon and Syria,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Antalya diplomatic forum.
The Turkish leader claims that the Syrian “revolution” offers an opportunity to bring stability in the region.
“We will not allow Syria to be attracted to a new instability vortex,” the President of Turkey continued.
He argues that Israeli attacks have thoroughly struggled the efforts to combat the Islamic State.
Turkey suspended all the trade with Israel, and President Erdogan accused the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of committing “Genocid” in Gaza. Israel launched the offensive against Hamas as a respond to the attack by the Palestinian organization on the Israeli territory on October 7, 2023.
In Friday's speech, Erdogan condemned the “barbaria” of Israel, referring to an air attack that was carried out during the night and who, according to Gaza officials, killed 10 members of the same family.
“Even this morning, 10 people, including seven children, from the same family were martyred in Khan Yunis. If this is not barbarism, I ask what it is?”, Concluded the Turkish leader.
