Annunciation, Babi holiday

The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a holiday established in memory of the day when the Archangel Gabriel brought the Virgin Mary the good news of the upcoming birth of the Son of God. The holiday falls on a great post or on a bright week. Therefore, the duration of the celebration is different – from one to three days. If the Annunciation coincides with Easter, then the Orthodox celebrate a double holiday called Kiriopasha. True, this rarely happens: the latest Kiriopasha was in 1991, and the next will be only in 2075.

The Russian people loved this holiday very much – it was considered one of the most important in the year. Firstly, the post was always weakened for the Annunciation, even if it fell on a passionate Friday. Especially for this day, Kulebyak was prepared – a special pie with fish or cabbage. Secondly, on this day they celebrated the third meeting of spring (the first was to be in a meeting, the second-for magpies).

In Rus', it was considered a great sin to take on this day for any, even the smallest thing. Moreover, it was believed that even unreasonable creatures honor a great holiday. People said so: “On this day, the girls do not weave, the birds do not go nests.” In some areas, they even believed that if the bird drinks the Annunciation Matin and pushing the nest on this day, then as a punishment it will not be able to fly for several days. However, the holiday itself was considered bird. On this day, it was customary to redeem the birds from the catchers and release them. It was said that the bird would intercede before God for the one who freed it.

According to folk belief, on the day of the Annunciation, God himself blesses the earth and everything that grows on it. In this regard, a tradition has appeared on the eve of the holiday or on the holiday itself seeds intended for sowing. It was necessary to sow them on time. “Whoever sows early – does not lose seeds,” the people said.

A special sign existed for cabbage. The peasant took the first head, torn in the fall from the bed (he was specially stored for this), carried it to the basement and left it for the night. The next day he was examined; The lucky ones found seeds in such a head, which was not afraid of any frost – as well as the cabbage born of them.

Also, under the Annunciation at night, they burned their straw beds, rode through the fire and fumigated dresses. All this was done to exterminate diseases and protect yourself from witchcraft.
