Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the most famous directors in Greece, and in 2024 directed the movie “Poor Things”, which won four Oscar awards, including the best actress, awarded Emma Stone, as well as the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
The Greek Ministry of Culture, Lina Mendoni, refused a request for the Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, a laureate of the Oscar, to film at Acropolis, saying that the scenes do not match the image of the historical site, writes AFP.
Lanthimos, 51 years old, who also won many prizes in the US and Europe, had asked for permission to film this month in Acropole a few scenes from his new film, an SF opera entitled “Bugonia”, in which Emma Stone plays.
But the Ministry of Culture explained on Thursday, in a statement, that he refused permission because “the proposed scenes are incompatible with the symbolism” and “the values that the Acropolis represents.”
According to the Greek press, the scenes in question involved bodies scattered on the acropolis.
The ministry said that it offered the director alternative locations near the site, which is one of the most famous in Greece.
“Bugonia” is scheduled to be launched in Greece in November.
