Violent storms have hit extended areas of Italy, especially in the north of the country, where they caused large -scale damage, representatives of Italian emergency services said on Saturday, reports DPA, taken over by Agerpres.

In the Lombardy region, a tornado has snatched several trees from the roots and destroyed the roofs of houses about 40 kilometers northeast of Milan, between Verderio and Suisio, according to the Fire Department.

Hail storms

Storms accompanied by hail with a diameter of up to eight centimeters have also hit the Piedmont region, damaging numerous cars, destroying roofs and causing damage to agricultural crops.

In Varzo, on the border with Switzerland, the streets turned into true rivers after a torrential rain. The rubble leaks flooded parts of the village, and two houses had to be evacuated.

Firefighters received over 200 calls within 12 hours, including Lecco, near Lake Como, as well as in Padua, in the Veneto region. The day before, the Italian emergency services responded to about 1,300 emergency calls at national level due to storms.

Meteorologists expect this weekend to remain changing. The Civil Protection Agency issued a yellow alert for Saturday in several regions, including Lombardia, Veneto, Tuscany, Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, Campania, Apulia and Calabria.

Warning were issued regarding new storms, torrential rains, floods and possible landslides. According to the forecasts of the Italian meteorological service, the situation should improve significantly on Sunday. Sun and rising temperatures are expected in many areas of the country.

Tourists evacuated because of a fire

While the north of the country is facing rain and storms, a major fire broke out in the southeast, near Lecce, on the Adriatic Sea coast.

Between the spa resorts Torre Chianca and Torre Rinalda, over 100 residents and tourists were forced to leave their homes and holiday accommodations for caution.

Fueling by the wind, the flames expanded on Fridays on the villas on Friday, and the roads were closed. However, there were no major damage, and the emergency services managed to extinguish the fire, whose cause remains unknown.
