GPS interference in the Baltic Sea. Donald Tusk announces an important meeting
Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Friday the convening of the summit of the Baltic Sea Council in order to discuss, among others Offshore investment security in the Baltic Sea. The head of government emphasized the importance of the problem of GPS signal interference, which can have serious consequences for projects such as marine wind farms.
The prime minister visited the Baltic Power wind farm construction area in Łeba, the largest and most advanced offshore project in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea, implemented by Orlen and the Canadian company Northland Power. During the visit, Tusk pointed out that the precision of action is crucial for such investments, and GPS signal interference may hinder work and flights on the region.
– Most likely, it is actions from the Russian side from the vicinity of Königsberg, which disorganize flights, also passenger – said the prime minister. He added that Poland actively coordinates the activities of the region's countries and engages NATO and the Baltic partners to ensure the security of investment and transport.
Tusk announced that the convened peak would cover all countries interested in cooperation in the Baltic Sea and will be devoted to the safety of investments, both Polish and foreign.
GPS interference has been observed by the Baltic states from the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, mainly at heights of about 1500 meters. In 2024, the warnings also concerned the Gulf of Finnish, after the notifications of ships crews. In July, the ICAO Council called on Russia to cease actions that disturb the GNSS satellite signals, which forced planes, ships and drones to change routes in the Baltic Sea region.
