How did Ukraine see Trump's meeting with Putin

A red carpet for Vladimir Putin and no result for Ukraine. The summit in Alaska, in which many have put their hopes, has been shown, from the perspective of many Ukrainians, a failure. Assessments and reactions.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump shortly after both landed at Anchorage airport
On Friday night on Saturday, many Ukrainians were awake, looking forward to Alaska. There were discussions between the US President, Donald Trump, and the leader of Russia, Vladimir Putin – discussions that, according to hopes, could give an impulse to peaceful settlement against the Russian war.
Many Ukrainians feared that the price could be territorial concessions, at which Kiev could be forced to consent. However, overnight, it became clear that the Alaska summit did not bring fundamental changes in the end of the war. However, for Russia, the summit was beneficial, and this aspect is intensely discussed in Ukraine.
Press photos instead of agreements
“There are no concrete results for Ukraine,” says Oleksandr Krajew from Think-Tank Ukrainian Prism for DW. “Glory to the Lord that nothing was signed and no radical decisions were made. The summit was an extremely successful information operation. The war criminal Putin came to the US and shook hands with the leader of the free world,” says the expert in North America. According to him, apart from “Trump's compliments to Putin”, there were no clear answers to the most important questions. Krajew believes that Putin “handled on Trump with surgical precision” and told him everything he wanted to hear. Thus, Putin obtained exactly what he wanted.

Putin claimed not to understand what the journalists ask him
According to Ivan US, from the Foreign Policy Center of the National Institute of Strategic Studies of Ukraine, Putin's purpose was not the conclusion of the war, but its legitimacy and the exit from international isolation. “For Putin, a common photo with Trump was the purpose of this summit, to show in Russia that isolation has ended, there will be no new sanctions and everything is fine-a positive signal for markets. And for Trump it was a time when he wanted to demonstrate his strength, going with Putin, while there was a new one. Strong country in the world, “said US for DW.
In order to confirm this, the president of the Russian Security Council, Dmitri Medvedev, said after the summit that a “full mechanism for meetings” was restored between Russia and the US at the highest level. “Important: The meeting has shown that negotiations are possible without prior conditions and, at the same time, with the continuation of the special military operation (as the war against Ukraine is called – no). Both parties directly attribute the responsibility for the future results of the negotiations on stopping the hostilities of Ukraine and Europe,” Medvedev wrote.
More chaos after meeting?
Ivan US believes that the Alaska summit has not approached the peace Ukraine. On the contrary, he amplified chaos, as the US and Russia make contradictory statements about the continuation of a possible trilateral dialogue with the participation of the Ukrainian president Volodîmîr Zelenski. Thus, Moscow claims that Trump and Putin did not discuss a trilateral summit with Zelenski, while Washington states the opposite.
And Zelenski spoke about an invitation to a trilateral meeting. “We support President Trump's proposal on a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, USA and Russia. Ukraine emphasizes: important issues can be discussed at the level of heads of state, and a trilateral format is suitable for it,” he wrote on social networks after a telephone call with Donald Trump.
Zelenski has announced that he will meet Donald Trump on August 18 in Washington. “Ukraine reaffirms that she is prepared to work as productive as possible to obtain peace. President Trump informed me about his meeting with the Russian president and the main points of the discussion. It is important for the US power to influence the evolution of the situation,” said the Ukrainian president.
“Moscow does not change its goals”
In Ukraine there are fears that Zelenski's visit to Washington could lead to new US pressure on Ukraine. “Any 'not' from Ukraine could be presented as a lack of desire to end the war. Trump actually acknowledged that it is a 'exchange of territories for security guarantees', confirming that some agreements have been made and talking about a 'chance of success', wrote Iryna Gherașcenko, deputy and co-president social. She believes that such formulations allow Moscow to present this as a legitimacy of her requests. “Putin repeated again, during the short briefing, that the real causes of the conflict must be eliminated. This means that Moscow will not change its goals – because the real cause is, in its vision, the existence of an independent Ukraine,” warns Gherașcenko.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump made statements in front of the press
Ukrainian political scientist Vadîm Denîsenko believes, on the other hand, that Russia's idea of “doing business with the US in exchange for Ukrainian territories” has not worked. However, Putin has been earning time. “In Alaska, he agreed to negotiate,” Denîsenko wrote on social networks. He believes that Putin “lost the most important thing: his maneuverability. He drastically reduced his freedom of action and practically falls into China's arms.” Denîsenko believes that if there will be no results in the end of the war in the next two months, the subject will become part of the Chino American negotiations. “In other words: a new negotiation window will open at the end of the year, but only in the spring of 2026,” he estimates.
A red carpet, “bleeding”
After the reactions of the ordinary Ukrainians, what was indignant most was the red carpet lying at Putin's feet at the American military base in Anchorage. Hundreds of angry comments on social networks leave no doubt about how this gesture was perceived in Ukraine.
“History always remembers not only those who kill, but also those who honor the killers. It is a special type of shame and complicity in the crime, often confused with diplomacy. Today, this gallery was completed with a new image: a bloody red carpet and a parade of the guarantee for the architect, the architect, the architect, Deportations, “said Mustafa Nayyem, former parliamentarian and former head of the State Agency for Reconstruction and Infrastructure.
