The Minister of Defense assures: “Military pensions are not cut”. How much is the average pension in MApN

The Minister of Defense, Radu Miruţă, announced on Wednesday evening that the pensions, balances and allowances of the military will not be reduced, in the context of the decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the reform of magistrates' pensions. The official stated that the average pension in the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) is 5,008 lei.

The minister's statement comes after the Constitutional Court of Romania rejected the notification of the High Court of Cassation and Justice regarding the Bolojan Government's project on the reform of magistrates' pensions, establishing that the normative act is constitutional.
In this context, Radu Miruţă tried to clarify possible fears regarding a possible decrease in military pensions. “Many people ask me if, after today's CCR decision, military pensions will also be cut. The answer is very short: no, military pensions are not cut, because the military are not in a situation where their retirement age is reduced by 13 years. The military are not in the situation with pensions of tens of thousands of euros per month, the military are not in the situation with delayed files or with criminals whose punishments have been prescribed“, the minister said on Facebook.
He emphasized that the average pension in MApN is 5,008 lei and that, last year, the actual retirement age was higher than the minimum provided by law.

“The average pension in the Ministry of Defense is 5,008 lei and the age at which people retired last year is five years higher than the minimum age at which they would have had the right to retire and they did not choose to retire. They don't reduce balances, they don't reduce salariesthey do not reduce allowances, they do not reduce the number of soldiers, yes, they reduce the expenses within the MApN, which today are not carried out in the most transparent way possible and not in the most orthodox way regarding the value for which part of this money is spent, but not affecting the core of the Romanian Army, i.e. the human resource“, Miruta also affirmed.
The reform of magistrates' pensions, validated by the CCR
The Constitutional Court on Wednesday rejected the objections raised by the High Court of Cassation and Justice and decided that the draft law on the reform of magistrates' pensions is constitutional.
After the pronouncement of the decision, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared that the reform is a first step to eliminate the inequities that have affected citizens' trust in the state.
“We fought for the principle that unjustified privileges have no place in a public system. We can no longer afford to retire people in full physical and intellectual strength at 50, 51 or 52. In March we will come up with a bill which will continue the corrections. In a democratic state, respect for magistrates is a cornerstone. I have no doubt that following this reform this respect will not only not be destroyed, but, on the contrary, will be strengthened“, said Ilie Bolojan.
