Finding the remains of Dennis Bella is not only a closing of a long -term puzzle, but also a reminder of the hardships and dangers associated with the study of Antarctica. This event shows the importance of international scientific cooperation and advanced technologies that enabled the identification of the missing researcher.
How did the discovery occur?
At the beginning of the year, members of the Polish expedition came across human remains and small objects near the Ecology glacier. The find was transported to the Polish Antarctic Station, where detailed research was carried out with the participation of experts from various fields. The remains were then passed on to the coroner of the British Antarctic territory, which confirmed Bella's identity based on DNA tests.

David Bell, the brother of the deceased researcher, expressed gratitude for finding the remains. – British Antarctic Survey and British Antarctic Monument Trust showed us great support, and along with the sensitivity of the Polish team that brought him home, helped us reconcile with the tragic loss of our wonderful brother – he said in an interview with the BBC.
What else was found on the spot?
Polish research team, which included, among others Scientists from the University of Lodz and the Polish Academy of Sciences returned to the place of discovery four times. There were found there, among others A pipe, watch, radio, fragments of ski poles, a part of the tent and kerosene lamp.
How did Dennis Bell die?
Dennis Bell disappeared on July 26, 1959 during an ecology glacier trip. He fell into the ice gap hidden under the snow when he approached the dogs. Despite the attempts to save, the rope he was tied, and the researcher fell again. Since then, he has been considered missing.

Dr inż. Szymon Oryński from the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences emphasized that finding the remains after so many years is an unprecedented situation. – Many times even extremely expensive search expeditions do not have effect if you are not lucky. Here, the remains were found by accident, and only later a number of tests were carried out – he said for PAP.

The Polish Antarctic Station emphasized that the story of Dennis Bella is a moving reminder of the courage of polar articles. “After 66 years, Dennis symbolically returned home,” it was written in social media.
