The Czech government refused on Wednesday to advance once for the Czech accession to the euro area, claiming that there is not enough support among the population for renouncing the national currency, AFP reports.
“If the Sprjin does not reach at least 50%, it does not make sense to give up our currency,” Finance Minister Stanjura said in a statement.
According to a survey conducted last year by the Stem Institute, only a Czech in four would like to replace the crown with the euro.
When taking over the mandate, in 2021, the Prague government said he would try to meet the criteria in Maastricht, which did not happen in 2024, according to the Ministry of Finance.
Consisting of four different parties, the right center coalition is divided when it comes to accession to the euro area, even if President Petr Paul and the car sector have ruled in favor of accession to the single area.
Currently, the euro area comprises 20 countries, including the neighboring Slovakia, and all EU member states are about to adhere to the euro, even if there is no precise calendar.
