The Romanian Patriarchate said on Wednesday that it is firmly delimited by any extremist, totalitarian ideology and said that the manifestations of political instrumentation of the memory of the Holy Confessor Ilie Lăcătușu are totally unacceptable and occur without the opinion or consent of the Patriarchate.

“In view of the manifestations of a legionary character spent near the holy relics of the Holy Confessor Ilie Lăcătușu, on his feast day (July 22, 2025), we specify that the Romanian Patriarchate is firmly delimited by any extremist ideology. Association with movements that promote hatred and violence, xenophobia and racism ”, announced the Romanian Patriarchate, in a press release, according to Agerpres.

The Romanian Orthodox Church (BOR) mentions that “the Holy Confessor Ilie Lăcătușu was canonized for the confession of the Christian faith and suffering in the communist prisons, and the most stinging evidence of his holiness consists in the existence of his holy relics and the countless miracles.”

“But the manifestations of political instrumentation of his memory are totally unacceptable and are happening without the opinion or consent of the Romanian Patriarchate, being made by people who do not represent us in any quality, these being the only ones responsible for their deeds,” said the Patriarchate.

Previously, on Wednesday, the Capital Police announced that he was doing investigations to identify the people who brought with them the flag of the Legionary Movement at the pilgrimage to Tuesday from the tomb of Ilie Lăcătușu in the Giulești Cemetery, to notify the Prosecutor's Office.

Dozens of people came to the Giulești Cemetery on Tuesday, where the rack with Father Ilie Lăcătușu was located. Some of the participants brought with them legionary flags, as they did last days-an episode described in a report by HotNews on the spot.

The police mentioned that the flag of the Legionary Movement was removed, “and in question activities were started to identify the people who flown the flag with the respective symbol.”

The Parliament has decided to tighten the punishments for fascism, legionaryism, racism or xenophobia. The law was attacked by President Nicușor Dan at the CCR, who had claimed the unclear character of the notions of “legionary” and “fascist”. The RCC, however, rejected the president's unconstitutionality objection as unfounded.
