Video rebellion of young people in Nepal, resulting in at least 14 dead and dozens of injured: “Stop corruption, not social networks”

At least 14 people died in Nepal, after the young protests broke out against stopping access to social networks and the alleged corruption of the Government. Nepalese police pulled with tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse young people who tried to enter Parliament, according to Reuters.

Nepal has blocked access to several social media platforms, including Facebook last week, after they have not registered with the authorities for measures that the Government said are to combat abusive use.

The government said that social media users with false identities have spread hate speeches and fake news and committed other crimes through social platforms.

The authorities imposed an emergency around the Parliament building after thousands of protesters tried to enter the legislature Monday, breaking the police barricade.

At least 14 people died, and dozens were injured, Nepal Television said.

Several protesters were injured and taken to a nearby hospital, said a witness Reuters, who also told that a group of protesters stopped a security vehicle heading to Parliament and an ambulance was set on fire.

Ekram Giri, a spokesman for the Nepalese Parliament, said that some protesters entered the Parliament, but did not reach the main building. They were driven by the police and gathered on the street in front of the building, he said.

“We imposed an emergency that will remain in force until 22:00, the local time, to control the situation after the protesters began to become violent,” said the spokesman of the Kathmandu District Bureau for Reuters Muktiram.

The police were ordered to use water cannons, sticks and rubber bullets to control the crowd, said Rijal.

The emergency state was extended to the Singha Durbar area of Kathmandu, which includes the prime minister's office, as well as other ministries, the residence of the prime minister and the president's house, said Rijal.

Protest in other cities

The police said similar protests were organized in Biratnagar and Bharatpur, in the Southern Plain, and in Pokhara, the gateway to the tenth highest mountain, Mount Annapurna, in western Nepal.

On Monday morning, thousands of young people, including students, many of them dressed in school or university uniforms, were stopped by the police to march to the Parliament building in the Kathmandu capital, where the demonstrations are forbidden.

The protesters wore the national flag and banners with slogans such as “Stop corruption, not social networks”, “uninterpret and” young people against corruption “, while marching through Kathmandu.

The television images showed that some protesters threw objects in policemen, who were dressed in anti-revolt equipment and gathered in one place, while the smoke from the tear gas grenades filled the street. The protesters also pushed the police barricades and torn them down.

Many people in this country in the Himalayas believe that corruption is generalized, and the government of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been criticized by opponents because he did not respect his promises.

About 90% of the 30 million inhabitants of Nepal use the Internet.
