Lteten, a company specializing in supermaterial applications and a global leader in lithium-sulfur battery technology, announced the acquisition of Northvolt two ESS in Gdańsk.

This is a plant with an area of 25,000 sq m, intended for production and research on energy storage systems (BESS).

Northvolt Two ESS is the largest plant of this type in Europe, which is still part of Northvolt Systems. The financial conditions of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Closing the transaction between Lteten and Northvolt is planned for the third quarter of 2025.

As stated in the communiqué, the takeover accelerates Lteten's expansion with lithium-sulfur batteries technology in Europe and provides the company with the production capacity needed to meet the growing demand on the BESS market.

Lteten previously announced the commercial shipment of its lithium-sulfur batteries to drones, to the international space station and the choice by Chrysler (Stellantis) for the conceptual Halcyon electric vehicle.

The Two ESS plant started operating in 2023. It has equipment that allows you to increase production capacity to 6 GWh and the possibility of expansion to over 10 GWh. The plant uses renewable energy sources and has orders reaching 2026.

“European customers clearly say that they want energy storage systems produced in Europe, from local supply chains, free from geopolitical risks. Gdańsk is an ideal place to meet this demand,” said Lars Herlitz, chairman of the supervisory board and co -founder of Ltenten.

BESS systems are the fastest growing battery market segment – key to satisfying the energy needs of AI data centers, ensuring European and North American power network and satisfying a rapid increase in energy demand in developing countries.

In December, Lteten announced a letter of intent worth $ 650 million with the US Export and Import Bank (Exim) for the development of batteries and the supply of BESS systems to developing countries.

“Northvolt has started operating with the mission of sustainable development of the European battery industry. Lteten continues this mission by introducing BESS production and lithium-sulfur batteries in Europe, eliminating the need to use raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, manganese or graphite, replacing them with locally available materials,” said Robert Chryc-Gawrychowski Northvolt Poland.

At the end of 2024, Northvolt announced the sale of Northvolt Systems as part of a strategic review and bankruptcy procedures. In April 2025, Scania, a Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles, announced the purchase of an industrial part of this unit. (PAP Biznes)
