Akulina buckwheat

On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of the Holy Martyr Akilina.

The peasants in Rus' sowed to Akulin (Akilin) ​​to buckwheat. The exact dates of these works depended on the weather and usually advancing “either a week before shark, or a week after Akulin.” People said: “This buckwheat is when rye is good.” This culture was considered whimsical, so it was not worth guessing a good harvest. On this occasion, there were special sayings: “Buckwheat is not even, and the earth is not even: you will not be thrown into another, but after you can’t collect the grain”; “Do not believe buckwheat in color, but believe it.”

According to the old custom, buckwheat porridge was cooked on this day and the poor were treated to it. Those, having strangled, thanked the owners and wished them a good future crop. “Unsit you, Orthodox, buckwheat without a count. Without bread and without porridge, our labors,” the poor said. The owners boasted, who had the most delicious dish. They recalled the saying on this day: “Buckwheat is our mother, and the bread is rye – our father's father.”

But milk should not be drunk on shark, despite the popular habit of drinking it with buckwheat porridge. It was believed that on this day it becomes harmful to health – “shark”, “milk from a frantic cow.”

Another name for the holiday: Akulina – Enjoy the tails. It appeared thanks to the invasion of flies and mosquitoes, which happened at this time. The livestock was restless, the cows ran from the vile in the meadows and fanned their tails. The people noticed: “From shark to half of July, cattle from the heat and gadfly are furious.” Therefore, animals were driven out to the pasture at dawn in order to close them in a cool stable by noon. It was not easy for people. “You will go with the forest – mosquitoes are whispering,” – such a saying appeared not in vain. At the same time, the clouds of Moshkars foreshadowed good weather.
