According to the latest data of the EU Statistical Office of Eurostat, in 2024 the indicator of serious material and social scarcity among young people (aged 15–29) in the EU amounted to 5.8 percent. For comparison, this percentage for the entire population (all age groups) was estimated at 6.4 percent.

The indicator of serious material and social scarcity (SMSD) is one of the key indicators of Eurostat monitoring poverty and social exclusion in the European Union countries.

The highest percentage of young people who faced a serious material and social scarcity was recorded in Bulgaria (17.2 percent), Romania (14.7 percent) and Greece (14.4 percent). However, in as many as ten countries of the community, this indicator was lower than 3.0 percent. The lowest was recorded in Croatia (0.7 percent), Slovenia (1.0 percent) and in Poland (1.4 percent).

The percentage of young affected in 2024 with severe material and social deficiencies throughout the EU slightly decreased compared to 2023, by 0.3 points. percent (from 6.1 percent). In our country, we recorded a decrease of 0.8 points during this period. percent (from 2.2 percent).

The SMSD indicator is a measure used by Eurostat to assess the level of material deprivation and social population. A person is considered a serious scarcity if he cannot afford at least 7 out of 13 specific goods, services or activities considered basic for a dignified life, such as ongoing payment of the apartment, regular meals or participation in social life.
