Ukraine was declared on Wednesday prepared for more direct discussions with Russia on Monday, in Istanbul, but Moscow must – said Kiev – to provide in advance the conditions for peace for the meeting to give results.
“We are not opposed to new meetings with the Russians and we expect their memorandum,” said Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Rustem Hourov, in an X message, according to AFP.
“The Russian side has at least four days before its departure (in Istanbul) to provide us with the document for examination,” he added.
Russia proposed Ukraine the date and place for the next round of peace negotiations. “Right there, on the spot, we are ready to start an essential discussion.”
The head of the Russian delegation to the peace negotiations with Ukraine, Vladimir Medinski, said on Wednesday that he sent the Ukrainians with a date and a place for a memorandum or conditions for the termination of battles, Agerpres reports.
Pressed by US President Donald Trump to end the bloodiest conflict in post-war Europe, the two belligerent states sent their delegates to Istanbul for the first time in March 2022, one month from the beginning of the Russian invasion on the Ukrainian territory. The dialogue did not lead to an armistice.
Putin again refuses an immediate cessation of fire in Ukraine. After discussing with Trump, he says that Russia is ready to work on a memorandum for a “possible future treaty”
Medinski wrote on Telegram that he called the Ukrainian Minister of Defense with proposals, including the date and place, for the next meeting.
“Let me emphasize: right here, on the spot, we are ready to start a fundamental, consistent discussion of each point in the package of agreements regarding a possible cessation of fire,” he said.
