Epifanov Day, Ryabinovka
On this day, the memory of Epiphanius of Cyprus – one of the early fathers of the Church, who became famous for the frantic denunciation of the heresies, is celebrated.
This day was named after one of the most beloved trees in Rus'. Girls in red sundresses came to the mountain ash and asked her to protect the houses from fires. They prayed for the same thing to St. Epiphanius. By the way, it was believed that if the morning of this day is “in the red caftan” (that is, there will be a bright dawn), then there will be a lot of fires in the summer.
The mountain ash protected people not only from the fire, but also from other misfortunes – it was not for nothing that she was always planted in the front garden. She defended from the evil eye. The branch of mountain ash, as they believed in Rus', helped a person who has lost a way in the forest to find a way to the house.
Many beliefs were also connected with another plant that was paid attention to on this day – with a jug. It was said that if the leaves of the water lily appeared on Epiphanes on the ponds, then there will be no more frosts. The jug in Rus' was called the “overcome-grass”, since, according to the peasants, it could overwhelm the unclean power and ailments, and also had love spell properties. But the white water lilies should not be brought to the house: it threatened with the death of livestock.
