Ukraine and Moldova Resolve Incident Involving Detained Border Guards

Ukraine and Moldova have successfully resolved an incident involving the detention of two Ukrainian border guards on October 15. According to the spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (DPSU), both countries exchanged information about the circumstances of the incident, which facilitated the return of the guards.

On that day, a border patrol in the Vinnytsia region was pursuing an individual attempting to illegally cross the border by swimming across the Dniester River. The DPSU reported that the individual resisted arrest during the apprehension.

As explained by the agency, due to low water levels in the river and engine failure, the boat carrying the Ukrainian border guards was carried to the Moldovan shore. There, a group of individuals threatened the soldiers and pulled the boat ashore. Moldovan border guards subsequently arrived at the scene and apprehended the border violator.

The Moldovan border police also reported the detention of the two Ukrainian servicemen near the village of Holoshynets and initiated a criminal investigation for the suspected illegal border crossing.

The DPSU has launched an internal investigation concerning the actions of the border patrol involved. Representatives from the border services of both nations held a meeting to clarify the details of the incident.

“As a result of the review of the situation that occurred on October 15 and the exchange of information between the parties, the Ukrainian border guards were returned to the territory of Ukraine,” stated Demchenko.
