Call for Nationalization of Russian Stake in Kyivstar Due to Security Threat

Authorities are being urged to nationalize the Russian stake in Kyivstar due to national security concerns, according to an investigation. Kyivstar, which integrates with telecom businesses such as Uklon, Helsi, and Tabletki.ua, centralizes data regarding movement, medical services, and the needs of Ukrainians for medications. However, Russian economic interests remain within the group, as highlighted by Censor.
The call for nationalization follows the government’s recent move to nationalize Sense Bank and attempts to seize IDS assets. Journalists are advocating for the inclusion of the Kyivstar stake linked to billionaire Mikhail Fridman and his partners in state revenue. A court had previously overturned the arrest of the operator’s corporate rights.
Censor also pointed out that Fridman is suspected of funding Russian military enterprises, while sanctions from Ukraine, the United States, and the United Kingdom against him remain in effect. Consequently, a critical issue arises concerning the mechanisms in place to protect Ukrainian citizens’ data from improper access.
