The future German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned on Monday that “united Europe is threatened” equally by the war led by Russia against Ukraine and the electoral ascension of the extreme externally, AFP reports.
Europe “is threatened from the outside by an imperialist and authoritarian war to the east and also inside, by frightened and uncertain, even radicalized citizens,” said Merz during the Congress of his party, the Christian Democrat (CDU).
He asked the German citizens to continue to support Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, considering that they are at stake “peace and freedom” in Germany itself.
“The fight of Ukraine against the aggression of Russia is at the same time a struggle for maintaining peace and freedom in our country,” as the offensive of Moscow “refers to the political order of the European continent as a whole,” Merz said.

The future chief of the Berlin executive has lamented the lack of confidence in democracy in his country, currently reached a minimum level after World War II.
The CDU leader asked the approximately 150 delegates to approve the coalition agreement with the Social-Democratic Party (SPD), after the German conservatives obtained the most votes in the parliamentary elections on February 23.
The approval from the CDU delegates is expected on Monday evening, after its traditional Bavarian ally, the Christian-Social Union (CSU), has already accepted.
Subsequently, the full attention will focus on SPD, which should until Tuesday night give the green wave to the coalition agreement with the conservative block.
