Fuel Prices Could Reach 15 zł per Liter, Expert Warns

Could fuel prices soar to 15 zł per liter? Filip Rudnik, an expert from the Centre for Eastern Studies, states that determining an upper limit is challenging. He remarked on the program “Onet Rano. Finansowo,” that given the current negative trends, “the sky is the limit.”

This autumn could be painful for drivers as fuel prices face pressure from multiple fronts. Attacks on Russian refineries are curtailing diesel supply, and escalating tensions in the Middle East heighten the risk of oil supply disruptions.

Rudnik explained that these two factors—the conflict in the Middle East and Ukrainian strikes on refineries, coupled with Russia’s export restrictions on diesel and gasoline—are creating a very tight market. He noted that there are effectively no spare capacities or alternative channels to import additional volumes in the near term.

In this environment, the question arises about possible fuel price levels next year. Is a scenario where a liter of fuel costs 15 zł plausible?

The expert indicated that as the situation worsens, it is hard to set a firm upper limit. He reiterated, “Considering how this situation is evolving negatively, the sky is the limit.”

However, he also stated that reaching the 15 zł mark would require unforeseen factors to emerge. “Of course, 15 zł would be a shock. There would have to be additional, unpredictable circumstances, such as adverse weather conditions in the Gulf of Mexico that could prevent the export of oil and petroleum products from the United States,” he explained.

Political decisions regarding exports from the U.S. could also impact the market.

“For instance, a political regulation from the U.S. banning diesel exports would also strike directly at American businesses and oil companies that have been thriving since 2022 due to inflated oil prices and limited supply from sanctions on Russian oil and the war initiated by Vladimir Putin in Ukraine,” Rudnik commented.
