Mike Dean, a prominent and often controversial figure in Premier League refereeing, has unveiled some surprising challenges he set for himself during matches. The 58-year-old, who officiated 553 games in the league from 2000 to 2022, disclosed these revelations on the podcast “Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party,” hosted by the former Leicester City striker.
Dean admitted that he often treated these self-imposed challenges humorously, particularly before the introduction of VAR in 2019. He recalled a peculiar experiment: “I would start a match and see how long I could go without blowing my whistle,” he shared.

According to Dean, he achieved remarkable feats during his officiating career: “I managed to go 20 to 25 minutes without blowing the whistle a few times. I would let the game continue, just to see how long I could stretch it.” He did not specify which matches these incidents occurred in or if there were plays that warranted his intervention.
15 Minutes Without Leaving the Center Circle
In another self-imposed challenge, Dean would remain in the center circle as long as possible. He recounted how assistant referees would egg him on, saying, “You can’t do that,” to which he would respond, “I’ll give it a try.” In one match, he managed to stay in the center circle for about 15 minutes without stepping out.
These candid revelations have sparked criticism in England, with fans questioning Dean’s professionalism. However, sources within English refereeing have labeled his claims as unfounded, asserting that there is no evidence to support them. The incidents he described occurred before VAR was implemented and during a different leadership of the governing body overseeing professional officiating.

Since retiring, Dean continues to attend matches for his beloved Tranmere Rovers. He confessed that his nearly three decades of officiating experience do not prevent him from reacting like a fan when he disagrees with a decision. “I always do. Sometimes my daughter is with me, and I say, ‘That should have been a red card.’ She tells me, ‘Dad, take a day off and enjoy the game.’ But I can’t,” he explained.
Dean still keeps in touch with several referees officiating in League One and League Two. His post-retirement revelations have previously stirred controversy; for instance, he admitted that during the VAR review of the Chelsea vs. Tottenham match in August 2022, he did not call Anthony Taylor to the monitor after Cristian Romero pulled Marc Cucurella’s hair, citing friendship as a reason for not wanting to complicate matters for Taylor.
Starting his refereeing career in 1985, Dean entered the Premier League in 2000 and oversaw significant matches, including the 2008 FA Cup Final and the 2011 League Cup Final. He retired from on-field officiating in 2022 but continued for one season solely as a VAR referee.
