Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that there is a potential for a peace agreement to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Speaking at an economic forum in Russia’s Far East, he affirmed, “Is there a chance? In my opinion, yes, there is.” Putin’s remarks came just one day after he claimed that Russia is winning the war against Ukraine and refused to negotiate with what he termed the “Ukrainian terrorists.”
During the forum, Putin reiterated that the solution to the conflict lies primarily with the countries involved—Russia and Ukraine. He stated, “Ultimately, however, the problem must be resolved by the countries involved in the conflict—Russia and Ukraine. This is the correct approach. However, we are grateful to all those who are trying to contribute to finding a solution.” He noted that several nations, including the United States and China, are willing to support peace efforts.
Putin Acknowledges Russia’s Challenges
On Wednesday, in his most detailed comments about the war in recent weeks, Putin admitted that Ukrainian attacks within Russia have caused significant damage, particularly from drone strikes. He highlighted that managing such threats is particularly challenging but insisted that Russia’s defensive measures have improved, stating that only 10% of their oil refineries need repairs.
Military Losses and Territorial Gains
Putin also conveyed confidence in Russia’s advancement on the battlefield, telling reporters, “I have no doubt that the enemy will collapse,” although he did not specify when this might occur. He claimed Russian forces captured 270 square kilometers in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region in August, encircling two major groups of Ukrainian troops comprising between 4,500 to 4,800 soldiers and up to 2,000 soldiers, respectively.
However, an analysis from the Institute for the Study of War indicated a different perspective on the frontlines. According to figures provided by the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian forces suffered 42,020 casualties in August 2026, marking the second consecutive month with over 40,000 Russian casualties. This translates to an average of 340 casualties per square kilometer of territory captured and 465 casualties for each square kilometer of territory secured.
Moreover, in July, Russian casualties totaled 42,860, and in June, 39,290 soldiers were reported killed or injured. In terms of territorial control, Russian troops gained 90.35 square kilometers in August, while also losing at least 129.8 square kilometers due to Ukrainian counter-offensive operations, exceeding the area they had gained.
