Jerome Pineau Critiques Rafael Nadal as a Role Model for Young Athletes

Jerome Pineau, a former professional cyclist with a career spanning from 2002 to 2015, has sparked controversy with his recent comments regarding tennis legend Rafael Nadal. Pineau stated that Nadal should not be considered a role model for young athletes.

Nadal, regarded as one of the greatest tennis players in history with 22 Grand Slam titles, retired at the end of 2024. A four-episode documentary about his life and career recently premiered on Netflix, highlighting his struggles with multiple injuries and the immense effort he put in to continue competing.

Pineau on Nadal: “He Can’t Be a Role Model for Ignoring His Body”

While many admire Nadal for his ambition and resilience, Pineau has a different perspective. He believes Nadal’s attitude towards his own body and pain management is not exemplary and suggested that the number of painkillers he has taken over the years could warrant suspension for doping if he were a cyclist.

“No, Nadal is not a role model for young athletes. I’ll simply say that based on his actions and words, if he were a cyclist, he would have been condemned for doping,” Pineau stated, as reported by golazo.ro.

Pineau acknowledged Nadal’s talent, hard work, and endurance but emphasized, “On the other hand, he cannot be an example when it comes to not listening to his body, pushing through pain, and creating other issues to treat a long-standing problem.”

He concluded, “I am one of those who says: ‘I practice sports at a very high level, but if I have a problem, I treat it, stop, and resume when I am healed.’”

Hailing from Mont-Saint-Aignan, Pineau began his cycling career in 2002 with Team Bonjour and later raced for Quick-Step and IAM Cycling. His notable career victories include the Tour of Normandy (2002), Paris-Bourges (2004), and the Almeria Classic (2004).
