Poland wants a permanent US base. Warsaw appeals to the Trump administration

The minister presents the details
“I have forwarded to US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth an official proposal to establish a new, permanent US military base in Poland,” wrote Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz on X. “The US involvement in Poland's security is not decreasing – on the contrary, it may be even greater,” he noted.
During a later press conference, the head of the Ministry of Defense stated that “final decisions have not been made yet, but we are on the right track.” He added that Warsaw will “do everything in its power” to expand the US military presence, noting that officials are currently working on the details with their American counterparts.
This proposal revives Poland's long-standing ambitions.
The US is withdrawing from Europe
Kosiniak-Kamysz's request comes during political games surrounding the deployment of American troops in Europe. The Trump administration is moving away from supporting Europe militarily and appears to want to do so in a way that will harm its political opponents — while strengthening ideological allies such as Polish President Karol Nawrocki.
Karol Nawrocki, who is politically close to Donald Trump, declared that he would personally lobby the US president to increase the number of soldiers at the expense of Germany – which was opposed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Nevertheless, it was announced by Washington in May the decision to send additional troops to Poland was enthusiastically received across the Polish political spectrum. Tusk praised this decision, and Nawrocki thanked Trump for his “friendship towards Poland.”
