What does the Memorial organization say about the situation of prisoners of war?

According to “Gazeta Wyborcza”, the report describes the situation of Ukrainian prisoners of war and the torture they are subjected to. A Polish citizen was also among the victims of Russian terror.

The man allegedly went to Ukraine after the start of a full-scale war to “see what was happening there.” During one of his trips, he “took a wrong turn and drove into a military post of the Russian Federation.”

The Pole, whose details are unknown, was detained by the Russians and imprisoned in Taganrog, where he died a month later. A report by a human rights organization states that at that time he was “regularly beaten for not learning Russian and for Poland helping Ukraine.”

“GW” journalists contacted Natalia Morozowa, who is one of the authors of the report. The activist admitted that Memorial was wondering whether to publish the Pole's story because it was known that the Russian authorities would not confirm this information, and the organization received a description of his story in writing from one of its informants. — We concluded that everything was correct and that the informant could not have come up with such details. Perhaps our publication will help us learn more, said Morozova.

In response to “GW”'s questions on this matter, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it had not received any information from Russia about the imprisoned Pole.
