Krasnoyarsk residents were told how diet is associated with the risk of stomach and intestinal cancer

The doctor explained how digestive disorders and dietary patterns may be associated with the development of cancer of the gastrointestinal tract. This was reported by the Ministry of Health of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
According to experts, nutrition is of great importance in the prevention of malignant neoplasms of the colon and stomach. In the Krasnoyarsk Territory, colon cancer ranks fifth in the structure of cancer incidence, stomach cancer is in sixth place.
In 2025, malignant neoplasms of the colon were detected in 1,134 residents of the region, and stomach cancer in 839 people.
“There are several risk factors for the development of these diseases, many of which a person can control. Primary prevention of intestinal and stomach cancer includes, among other things, adherence to the principles of rational nutrition,” explained Denis Medvedev, head of the department of abdominal oncology No. 1 of the regional oncology clinic.
Experts advise following a diet, regularly consuming plant fiber and limiting foods that can negatively affect the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. In particular, we are talking about fatty, smoked and pickled foods. Doctors recommend avoiding dyes and flavor enhancers if possible.
Denis Medvedev noted that digestive disorders can lead to obesity, metabolic problems and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. These conditions, in turn, may increase the risk of developing malignancies. The doctor also reminded about the basic rules for normal digestion. It is important for an adult to drink enough water, move more and include vegetables and fruits in the diet. The recommended amount is at least 400 grams per day.
Foods with fiber are considered beneficial for the intestines, as well as sources of healthy fats: fish, seafood, olive oil and nuts. At the same time, fatty, fried and sweets can worsen the functioning of the digestive system.
Experts also advise not to eat before bed. It is better to plan a light dinner about three hours before rest.
