Road of Turkey to the EU. The European Parliament adopted a resolution and condemned Erdogan


According to MEPs, despite the democratic and pro -European aspirations of a large part of Turkish society Turkey's accession process for the EU cannot resume. The resolution was adopted with 367 votes for, at 74 against and 188 abstaining.

“We constantly hear from the Turkish authorities about their alleged commitment to EU membership and how important it is for us to revive this process because of security and geopolitics, but this is not true. Membership concerns democracy, and the further they go towards the fully authoritarian model, the more they move away from membership in the EU” – said the resolution reporter, MEP Nacho Sanchez Amor (S&D).
MPs to the European Parliament expressed a deep concern about the constant deterioration of democratic standards in Turkey. They also condemned brutal repression against participants of peaceful demonstrations and punishing hundreds of protesters through mass processes in which no evidence of a crime is presented.
The MEPs also believe that attacks on the office of Istanbul, the Imamogle, who was deprived of the office, are a politically motivated move aimed at preventing him from starting in the upcoming presidential election. Thanks to these activities, the current Turkish authorities push the country further towards the completely authoritarian model – we read in the PE resolution.

EU membership depends on meeting specific accession criteria, such as stable institutions guaranteeing democracy, rule of law, human rights, respect and protection of minorities, good neighborly relations, compliance with international law and adapting to the common foreign policy and EU security.
PE deputies They also condemned the recent “illegal” visit of President Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the occupied areas of the Cypriot Republic.
