A man armed with a knife, who threatened the gendarmes on duty under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris on Friday, was wounded by gunfire from one of them, reports the France Presse agency. The case was taken over by the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office.
The man was transported to the hospital, according to police sources quoted by AFP. They stated that the gendarmes were under the Arc de Triomphe, a stone's throw from the Champs Elysees, for the ceremony to relight the flame at the tomb of the unknown soldier.
A gendarme, who was performing the honor duty and who is part of the gendarmerie marching band, was slightly injured with a knife blow by the assailant, before another gendarme opened fire to stop the attacker.
The suspect, domiciled in Seine-Saint-Denis, near Paris, is on the records of MICAS (Individual measure of administrative control and supervision).
The French anti-terrorist prosecutor's office announced the launch of an investigation.
