“The Mandalorian and Grogu,” the new “Star Wars” movie, can be seen in theaters today

“Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu”, the new film of the beloved film franchise created by George Lucas, can be seen in preview from Wednesday, May 20, in cinemas in Romania.
As with almost all films produced by Hollywood, the general premiere for the new “Star Wars” will take place on Friday. But “The Mandalorian and Grogu” can be seen starting Wednesday in theaters across the country in 2D, 3D, IMAX 3D, 4DX 3D and Dolby Atmos formats. The cinema chain Cinema City is screening it in advance at most of its locations.
The film is considered one of the most anticipated of the year, both due to the popularity of the “Star Wars” franchise in general and the success of “The Mandalorian” series on the Disney+ streaming platform.
In anticipation of the new film, several “Star Wars” productions have climbed back into the ranks of Disney+'s most watched movies and series.
Data from FlixPatrol, a site that monitors the popularity of various productions available on major streaming platforms in real time, shows that “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace”, a film released in 1999, and “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith”, from 2005, occupy the top positions in the ranking of the 10 most watched films on Disney+.
What 'The Mandalorian and Grogu', the new 'Star Wars' movie, is about
USA Today notes that the trailers released by Disney for the new film in the franchise it bought from George Lucas in 2012 are intentionally vague about the story, showing only that it's a perilous new journey for bounty hunter Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal), better known as “The Mandalorian,” and his wide-eyed protégé Grogu, adored by “Baby Yoda” fans.
The premise of the movie is quite simple and requires no prior knowledge of the TV series. Briefly, the action takes place after the fall of the Galactic Empire in “Return of the Jedi”, as the New Republic tries to keep the peace, even as warlords and gangsters wreak havoc on the galaxy.
The New Republic recruits Din Djarin to rescue the young slug Rotta the Hutt (voiced by Jeremy Allen White, star of the acclaimed series “The Bear”), who has been captured and thrown into a sordid underworld where he is forced to fight in gladiatorial combat against ferocious monsters.
The film's big antagonist isn't revealed until later in its run. “In general, though, beware of galactic mobsters and rival bounty hunters who have put a price on Din Djarin's head,” writes USA Today.
Sigourney Weaver to star alongside Pedro Pascal in new 'Star Wars' film
One of the things that attracted attention about the new feature film is the name that joined Pedro Pascal in a leading role. After playing the role of Kiri / Dr. Grace Augustine in James Cameron's last two “Avatar” films, Sigourney Weaver is now making her debut in the “Star Wars” universe.
She plays Colonel Ward, a pilot who relays orders to the Mandalorian, and said she hadn't seen the series about him and Grogu before she was approached to star in the film about the two. Speaking at last year's Comic-Con, she said Jon Favreau, creator of The Mandalorian, got in touch with her and suggested she give it a quick look to get a feel for it.
“I was, of course, amazed by him and I fell in love with him, with Pedro [Pascal] and Grogu,” said Weaver, quoted by People magazine.
“I also like how the 'Star Wars' universe — it's not trying to make each movie depend on the whole baggage of the previous movies. Now they're individual stories set in the same universe,” added the 76-year-old actress.
Weaver also shared that “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is set in the “outer circle” of the galaxy far, far away, and that its story follows the events of Season 3 of the Disney+ series.
The new 'Star Wars' movie is created by the name behind the series 'The Mandalorin'
“The Mandalorian and Grogu” is directed by Favreau, who wrote the screenplay with Dave Filoni, his creative partner on the Mandalorian and Grogu series.
“To have the opportunity to introduce this [film] in a movie theater, not only to people who have always loved 'Star Wars', but also to introduce a new generation to 'Star Wars', you know you want to reach people and get them as excited about 'Star Wars' as you are and make them feel what I felt the first time I saw it… I think that's a responsibility,” Favreau said in an interview with starwars.com last month.
“And we put a lot of thought into this, because we've been working together for a very long time. We want to create an experience that doesn't depend on someone already loving 'Star Wars,' but to give them an opportunity to fall in love with it like we did,” he added, referring to the collaboration with Filoni.
The official description of the film published by Disney states that:
“The Evil Empire has fallen, and the Imperial Warlords are still spread across the galaxy. As the young New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought to achieve, they enlist the help of the legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu.”
