Former President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kabilile, has been sentenced to death in absence for war and betrayal crimes, BBC announces. RD Congo is the country in which they fought the mercenaries of Horațiu Potra.
The accusations made to Kabille refer to the alleged support given by him to the Rebele M23 group, which caused massive destruction in the eastern region of the country. The Kinshasa government has contracted Romanian mercenaries and other countries to fight against M23 and other groups of less powerful rebels, as regular armed forces failed to stop their advance in the east of the country.
Former President Kible was convicted by a military court for betrayal, crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, sexual aggression, torture and insurrection. He denied the accusations, but did not appear in court to defend himself.
The former president rejected the case as “arbitrary” and said that the courts are used as a “oppression tool”. The place where it is currently is unknown.
Former President of RD Congo drove the country for almost 20 years
The 54 -year -old Kible led the Democratic Republic of Congo for 18 years, after following his father's power, Laurent Kabile, who was shot dead in 2001.
Kabille taught President Félix Tshisekedi in 2019, but later the relations between the two deteriorated, and Kabille entered the self-imposed exile in 2023.
In April this year, the former president said he wants to contribute to finding a solution for the bloody battles in the East and arrived a month later in the city of Goma, under the control of M23.
President Tshisekedi accused Kabille of being the “brain” behind M23, and the senators withdrew to him legal immunity, opening the way for his criminal prosecution.
Decades of conflict increased earlier this year, when M23 took control over large areas of the country rich in the country, including Goma and Bukavu, as well as two airports.
Invoking overwhelming evidence, the UN and several Western countries have accused the neighboring country of Rwanda of supporting the M23 group and of sending thousands of soldiers to the territory of the Democratic Congo Republic. The mercenaries of Potra managed at the end of January to surrender to the armed forces in Rwanda, where they returned home.
Rwanda denies the accusations regarding the support of the conflict and claims to act to prevent the conflict from extending.
An agreement to cease fire between rebels and government was signed in July, but the bloodshed continued.
