Andrzej Bargiel became the first person to climb Mount Everest and descended on skis without extra oxygen, reports People magazine.

The extremely Polish skier, 37, wore his skis in the back while climbing the tip of about 8.8 kilometers, before starting the slopes, Monday, September 22, around 3:00, according to the British newspaper The Times.

In a common video published on Instagram, made with Red Bull and Red Bull Polska, Bargiel can be seen climbing to the top before descending on skis on the extremely steep surface of the mountain.

“The first descent on skis on Mount Everest without bottled oxygen,” wrote the legend on the video.

Bargiel then says in the recording: “I am on the top of the highest mountain in the world and I am going to descend on skis.”

After reaching the top, the climber descended on skis to camp 2, at almost 6.4 kilometers altitude, where he rested overnight, before descending to the base camp, to another 5.3 kilometers, the next morning.

Bargiel was honored with a scarf called Khada Tibetan, a symbol of respect in Nepal. The top of Mount Everest is on the border between China and Nepal.

“The sky is the limit? Not for Poles!”

Bargiel's team told The Times that this achievement represents “a turning point in the world-alpinism.”

The Times also notes that the climber was caught in a snowfall for 16 hours. This happened when it reached over 8 kilometers altitude, in an area known as the “death area”, due to the lack of oxygen.

“The sky is the limit? Not for the Poles!”, Wrote the prime minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, on the social network “X”.

Bargiel is also the first person to descend on skis on the second highest mountain, K2 in Pakistan, in 2018.

He also became the first person to ski over the four peaks of the Karakoram mountain chain, totaling about 8 kilometers, in 2023.
