Financing for a rainwater tank in 2026. Who can get support?

Collecting water in rainwater tanks is like a two-in-one offer. In this way, you can realistically fight drought, but also reduce your water bills. In addition, the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management is launching a program that offers co-financing for investments in households.
As Forsal.pl reminds, in Poland we retain only 6.5 percent. runoff water, while the European average is 20%. New funding from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management is intended to help improve the water balance and protect against the effects of climate change.

The grant will cover 90 percent. installation costs, up to PLN 8,000 zloty. The program is addressed to owners and co-owners of real estate with a residential building.

“The Microretention Program is another element of the activities of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management for adaptation to climate change, which is one of the priorities of the Fund's Operational Strategy for 2025–2028. Thanks to the European Funds, we can increase retention in single-family buildings, protect water resources and, consequently, contribute to mitigating the effects of drought and prevent flooding,” explains Robert Gajda, vice-president of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, whose words are quoted by the website Forsal.pl.
Formerly “My Water”, now Microretention. You can still get funding for rainwater tanks
Program assumptions The subsidy covers investments completed after July 1, 2024. Applications can be submitted to provincial environmental protection funds – recruitment will start in the second quarter of 2026. The program does not cover investments already co-financed under “Moja Woda”.
Natural persons who are owners, co-owners or perpetual usufructuaries of residential real estate may apply for funding.

As we read on the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management website, under the Microretention program it will be possible to receive a subsidy for the purchase, assembly, construction, expansion and commissioning of installations for:
- collecting rainwater or meltwater from impermeable surfaces, e.g. roofs, sidewalks, driveways,
- storing rainwater in tight tanks with a total capacity of min. 2 cubic meters,
- retention of rainwater, including meltwater, in the ground, e.g. unsealing of surfaces, absorption wells, drainage, infiltration boxes, open tanks,
- use of retained rainwater or snowmelt water, e.g. pumps, sprinklers, water distribution centers.
The installations should ensure the collection of water from impervious surfaces and use the water in such a way that there is no need to discharge it outside the property, including into storm sewers.
2 in 1 offer. Financing and caring for the environment
Collecting rainwater is not only an ecological but also an economic activity. As calculated by Forsal.pl, the owner of a single-family house – depending on the intensity of rainfall in a given period – can collect up to 180 liters of water during just one downpour. This amount can translate into an annual “harvest” of up to 30,000. liters of water that can be used in many ways.
Rainwater is soft water, which means that it can be used without problems and concerns, e.g. in household appliances.

Rainwater does not contribute to limescale deposits. Moreover, it can be used on the farm for activities such as flushing toilets or washing vehicles. It also goes without saying that it is ideal for watering the garden and any home crops.
As a result, collecting rainwater allows you to save up to PLN 510 per year on water and sewage. It is also a way to avoid fees and penalties for discharging rainwater into the sewage system without a permit.
