A Romanian settled in Britain is the favorite in the race for the local elections on May 7 in Birmingham, the second largest city in the United Kingdom, where polls and electoral dynamics place him in first place.
Known online as the ironic “Georgescu of Birmingham”, candidate Julian Nistor has quickly gained visibility through a campaign focused on local issues, but also through the support he claims in the Ward End communities. His surprising rise has generated both interest and controversy amid an increasingly tight electoral contest.
Julien Nistor will run in Ward End, an area of Birmingham where a large community of Roma and Romanians lives, from the Workers Party of Britain. Articles about him have already appeared in the British press, in which he is described by terms such as “Romanian Legend”, “Romanian Ambassador” or “the leader of the Romanians from Birmingham”, notes the UK announcement.
In a campaign clip that quickly spread in the communities of Romanians in the diaspora, Nistor sends a simple message, focused on the everyday problems of the neighborhood where he is running. His speech is simple and direct, focused on topics such as infrastructure, cleanliness and public order.
“I want to change this area a bit, we need it to be good for everyone. We need cleanliness, no rats, no potholes in the road,” says the candidate in an appeal to voters in Ward End, in English.
Beyond this pragmatic level, however, his candidacy is part of a wider political context, influenced by the platform of the formation that supports him.
The Workers Party of Britain is known for critical positions towards Western foreign policy and for promoting the idea of Britain withdrawing from NATO, messages which have begun to gain sympathy with certain segments of the British electorate.
In this context, Julien Nistor's candidacy goes beyond simple local competition and is perceived online as part of a wider current of contestation of Euro-Atlantic structures, which is why he has been ironically labeled as “Georgescu of Birmingham”.

For Workers Party GB, Julian Nistor remains, however, one of the key people of the electoral campaign, being presented with distinctions such as “Winner of Citizen Medal”, “Ambassador for Crimestoppers” and “Community Champion”.

“They wanted to liquidate me, what else…”
in an intervention on Diasporenii television, Julien Nistora claimed that there would be pressure on him to withdraw from the competition.
“They wanted to liquidate me, but I am not withdrawing from the electoral race. I am supported not only by Romanians and Roma…, I am the favorite and I will 100% win a mandate in Birmingham”, he said.
“There was an attempt on my life. They attacked me in traffic, kicked my car and twisted my door… They wanted to break the windows… They wanted to liquidate me, what else… They only made me more ambitious…”, he declared for Diasporenii TV.
As for his electoral chances, the press notes that Julien Nistor enjoys solid support in Ward End, which places him among the favorites. A recent opinion poll by PollCheck indicates that he could easily win the election with more than 37% of voting intentions.
However, the competition remains open, as representatives of other local communities hope to overturn the electoral calculations, aware that a decisive factor in Ward End is the vote of the Romanian community.
In this sense, several candidates are trying to find supporters among it.
One of them is Harris Khaliq, a young candidate from the Muslim community with a growing public image who has already addressed Romanian voters and managed to attract support from this area.
In a campaign video, he appears alongside a member of the Romanian community who supports him, against Julien Nistor: “Harris Khaliq is No. 1 here in England and he can help everyone in Romania.”
The local elections in England are scheduled for May 7, and in the event of a victory, the Romanian would become a local councilor of the Ward End area in the east of Birmingham, the second largest city in the United Kingdom.
