Russia has decided to close the tap for Kazakh oil going through “Druzhba” to Germany

Russia has decided to stop oil exports from Kazakhstan to Germany through the Drujba pipelines starting May 1, three industry sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

The sources, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the revised oil export schedule had been sent to Kazakhstan and Germany.

Russia's political and trade relations with Germany have deteriorated amid the conflict in Ukraine, with Berlin supporting Kiev.

Russia's Energy Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he was not aware of a measure to stop oil exports.

“We will try to verify this,” Peskov told reporters on a daily conference call.

Germany placed local subsidiaries of Russia's biggest oil producer Rosneft under special administration in 2022, ending decades of energy ties between Berlin and Russia.

Germany bought more Kazakh oil last year

Kazakhstan's oil exports to Germany via Russia's Drujba pipelines totaled 2.146 million tonnes, or about 43,000 barrels per day, in 2025, a 44% increase over 2024.

Kazakhstan supplies oil to Germany through the northern branch of the Drujba pipeline, which crosses Russia, Belarus and Poland.

The supply has been repeatedly interrupted by Ukrainian drone attacks on the pipeline in Russia.

Germany's PCK refinery – one of the country's largest – located in the country's northeastern city of Schwedt, is partially supplied with Kazakh crude oil transported through the pipeline, following the disruption of Russian oil supplies following the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022.
