EU leaders react after Péter Magyar's decisive victory: “Hungary returns to the heart of the European Union”

Hungary enters a new political stage, after the victory of Péter Magyar. The result set off a chain reaction in Brussels, with several European leaders sending messages of congratulations and support for Budapest's new political direction.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that “Hungary chose Europe” and that “The Union becomes stronger when member states reaffirm their European path”.
“Europe's heart beats stronger in Hungary tonight. Hungary chose Europe. Europe always chose Hungary. A country rediscovers its way to Europe. The Union grows stronger. Hungary chose Europe. Europe always chose Hungary. Together we are stronger. A country returns to the road to Europe. The Union grows stronger.” wrote Ursula von der Leyen, on X.
And the leader of the European People's Party, Manfred Weber, welcomed the result, speaking about “a victory for responsible, citizen-oriented politics and concrete solutions”and stating that Hungary “returns to the heart of Europe”.
French President Emmanuel Macron also confirmed a telephone conversation with Péter Magyar, in which he congratulated him on the result and stressed the need for a Europe “more sovereign, safer and more competitive”.
“I have just spoken to Péter Magyar to congratulate him on his victory in Hungary! France welcomes the victory of democratic participation, the attachment of the Hungarian people to the values of the European Union, as well as Hungary's commitment to Europe. Let us move together towards a more sovereign Europe, for the security of our continent, for our competitiveness and for our democracy.” wrote Macron, on X.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, sent a congratulatory message to Péter Magyar, after his victory in the Hungarian national elections.
“Congratulations on the victory in today's national elections in Hungary. Hungary's place is at the heart of Europe,” wrote Metsola, in a message published on X.
A similar message came from German leader Friedrich Merz, who welcomed the election result and Péter Magyar's victory.
“Hungary has decided. Congratulations on the victory, dear Péter Magyar. I look forward to cooperation for a strong, secure and, above all, united Europe,” wrote Merz on the X platform.

Hungary's current prime minister, Viktor Orbán, gave a short speech outside campaign headquarters in which he conceded defeat and described the result as “painful but clear”. “I congratulated the winning party,” Orbán said, adding that while the political future is uncertain, he and his party will continue to “serve the country even from the opposition”.

Orbán also stated that “the task before us is clear”, emphasizing that the priority is to consolidate the party after the loss of government.
At the same time, Péter Magyar announced that he also received congratulations from the Chancellor of Germany and the Secretary General of NATO, signaling the rapid opening of the new government to international partners.
