Kemerovo surgeons froze and bled a newborn to save his life

30 March 14:28
Kemerovo doctors performed a unique operation on a baby with a fatal aortic defect.
As told in Research Institute of Complex Problems of Cardiovascular Diseases, the child developed insufficiency kidneys, intestines and liver. The reason for this was coarctation (narrowing) of the vessel, due to which the lower half of the body did not receive sufficient blood supply.
On the third day of life, the baby underwent intravascular intervention: through a puncture in the femoral artery, surgeons reached the aorta and installed a stent that widened the lumen. A week later, when the child’s condition had stabilized, the stent was removed, the tissue that caused the narrowing was excised, and the vessel was sutured.
During the operation, the newborn's blood circulation in all organs except the brain was completely stopped for 20-30 minutes. To prevent organ damage, the body was cooled to 26-28 degrees, writes VSE42.RU.
The heart defect has been eliminated, and the baby’s life is not in danger.
