Turkey starts as favorite against Australia
Turkey return to the World Cup after a 24-year hiatus and start with the first chance against Australia in the first match of the final tournament.
Turkey reached the World Cup after passing the two play-off matches, in March, with Romania and then with Kosovo. In the preliminaries, the players from the shores of the Bosphorus finished the group in second place, behind Spain.
Australia, on the other hand, have been a consistent presence at the World Championships in the 21st century, although none of the recent generations have been able to follow in the footsteps of 2006, when the team reached the round of 16.
Before Saturday's match, the two national teams have met twice before in a direct match, in 2004, when the Turks won each time, score 3-1 and 1-0.
In preparation for the World Cup, Turkey won the two friendlies this summer, 4-0 against North Macedonia and 2-1 against Venezuela. On the other side, Australia lost to Mexico, 0-1, and drew with Switzerland, score 1-1.
