Zelensky was asked if he thought Trump cared about the future of Ukraine. What did he say?

The journalist asked Zelensky if he believed that Trump was not indifferent to what the future of Ukraine would be. Before answering this question, the President of Ukraine “fell silent for a moment,” the channel noted.

After a pause, Zelensky noted that he “hopes so.”

He noted that modern US policy is focused primarily on its own interests. The American team speaks openly about this, Zelensky added. At the same time, the Ukrainian president assured that “Ukraine understands this.”

Context

Since 2025, the United States has been negotiating with the Russian Federation and Ukraine to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, in particular, the administration of US President Donald Trump presented a draft “peace plan.”

After the round tripartite negotiations in Geneva in February this year, the delegations planned to meet in early March, as Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky reported, during March 5–9 in Abu Dhabi (UAE). However due to the military operation that Israel and the United States launched against Iran on February 28, negotiations several times postponed at the request of the American side.

On March 21, Zelensky said that the United States was signaling its readiness to continue working in existing negotiation formats.

The US and Ukrainian delegations met in Florida on March 21st and 22nd. However, after the report of the Ukrainian negotiating team, Zelensky announced on March 24 that there was no “real movement” in the negotiations.
